Inflation and crime have become so severe in New York City that even products such as Spam have been locked up. At Duane Reade’s store in the Port Authority bus depot, the product — at $3.99 a can — is now being kept in plastic, anti-theft cases. 

Shoppers believe Spam is being put into plastic cages that need a cashier’s magnet to open because it is a highly stolen item among homeless people. Employees at the store said thefts have been surging over the past two-plus years, one individual estimating a minimum of four shoplifters every evening shift. 

Some shoppers are confused as to why Spam, along with $1.89 cans of StarKist tuna, are kept enclosed under lock and key, while pricier foodstuffs like $5.49 cans of Amy’s soup are left alone.
