Along with creating a fertile training ground for Republican officers on the federal level, maintaining control at the state level allows Republicans to have a say on the decennial reapportionment in 2021. Under Pompeo’s leadership, the Trump administration has maintained a hardline against Chinese advances in Hong Kong and the South China Sea. The administration has also imposed sanctions on CCP officials, barred the entry of Chinese diplomats and academics, and lobbied other nations to drop Chinese high-tech communications. In the speech, Pompeo attacked the president of MIT for canceling his scheduled talk after opposition from Chinese professors and students and admonished a senior official at the University of Washington for failing to aid Vera Zhou, a student who was detained in China, due to their dealings with Beijing. Both officials vehemently denied the allegations. One would think that the spate of Middle East peace deals with Israel would put President Trump in contention for a Nobel Peace Prize. After all, his predecessor, Barack Obama, was awarded one as soon as he entered office, after which America spent eight years playing second fiddle to China and tensions increased dramatically in the Middle East. For all his gaffes and boorish conduct, President Trump deserves credit for leveraging regional hostility toward Iran to create new economic and diplomatic alliances with Israel. While President Trump will likely never garner the praise of the international foreign policy establishment, leaving the world safer for Americans is prize enough and will be a lasting legacy for his administration.
