At the time, The Spectator advocated the United Kingdom “give right of abode to all passport holders in Hong Kong (about 3.25 million people),” among other measures to support the people of Hong Kong against Chinese authorities. Many political elites and so-called experts warned that such actions should be avoided because they’d anger Beijing. Indeed, the Communist Party gets very annoyed by democracy. But British policy should not be guided by a desire to avoid annoying China. “There is something about Chinese totalitarianism which brings out the silliness of many clever people. I suspect it is to do with the fact that Chinese civilization, being old and arcane, makes a certain type of person prize uncritically whatever privileged access he gains to the country.”
