Today, we need to reckon with totalitarian forces among us that, if given their way, would dispense with the American project and create a new system to ensure social justice and equality — as they define it and for our own good. But eventually, two plus two may very well equal five. And in the meantime, the memory of America would steadily fade from existence, becoming nothing more than a rumor.
Watching the deliberate, determined partisan negotiating strategies of Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, I was reminded of my own experience in the budget negotiations of 1990.
