What Newt’s Reading: Kamala Harris, once California's "top cop," seems to be okay with the violence and unrest happening in Portland. The actions of the protesters appear to be the same crimes she was once happy to prosecute. - Newt Kamala Harris and the Anarchists By Michael Tracey Wall Street Journal After seeing Portland’s riots firsthand, journalist Michael Tracy shares his fears of Democratic vice-presidential candidate Kamala Harris and her response to the violence. Observing the armor-clad rioters in-person made Tracy wonder why Harris has yet to condemn their actions — or the violence, arson, and vandalism in other American cities. Ironically, Harris, a former attorney general and self-proclaimed “top cop” of California, stands in support of a movement whose “animating premise is abolition of the entire criminal justice apparatus.” Democrats and anarchists in the streets may say they stand for the same movement, but in reality, their views and tactics differ wildly. Harris seems to be looking at these riots with rose-colored glasses, or perhaps not looking closely at all. Joe Biden has no defining message. Can you think of a single policy, or even a phrase, that identifies what he has stood for in this campaign? Beyond being a nice guy and wanting to serve the American people, he lacks anything substantive to speak of, especially when compared to President Trump. If he continues down this path, how firm will he be with China and Russia? Biden’s fortitude is a huge question for many voters, one that could make or break his chances of taking the White House. President Trump could use the fires as a “cautionary tale about the dangers of Democratic governance” heading into the presidential election. The fires, along with mass blackouts, have left many residents of California in disarray. California’s public utilities commission “failed to anticipate supply and demand or to accurately forecast the weather,” creating even more problems. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) may find himself in the hotseat after just one term as the coronavirus continues to hurt the state. President Trump’s plan to win over other states by using California as a warning may persuade enough Americans to support him. As the economy recovers and more Americans go back to work, opportunity zones will help ensure that the forgotten Americans can resume their trajectory of record employment, rising wages, and narrowing the wealth gap. - Newt Opportunity Zones Key to Lifting People Out of Poverty By Ben Carson and Brooke Rollins Fox News Dr. Ben Carson, secretary of housing and urban development, and Brooke Rollins, director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, discuss how to lift Americans out of poverty and boost the economy. About 35 million low-income citizens have been included in “opportunity zones” to draw investments and create jobs. While top-down techniques have failed at improving poverty rates over the years, the 2017 Tax Cut and Jobs Act “empowers local communities by making targeted tax cuts to spur business development.” This and other measures being implemented by the Trump administration are especially important as the coronavirus continues to affect the world. So far, the opportunity zones seem to be working, as they “grew 29 percent relative to non-opportunity zone businesses in eligible communities that were not selected.” The combination of cutting taxes and removing bureaucrats can better help the poor and bolster the American economy to reach the record levels it attained earlier this year.
