China is poised to win the global nuclear energy race.
China’s rapid expansion of nuclear power is outpacing the stagnant growth in the United States. Within a decade, China is set to become the world’s largest nuclear power producer and surpass the U.S., which currently holds 30% of global nuclear capacity but has seen little progress in 30 years.
In contrast, China tripled its nuclear capacity in just a decade. Growth in nuclear power slowed globally after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, despite its potential to provide substantial clean energy. Moreover, despite nuclear’s minimal carbon emissions, some political factions on the left oppose nuclear power, creating a paradox in the pursuit of clean energy solutions.
