Get Ready: Post Officegate is Coming

By Aaron Kliegman When at first a hoax doesn’t succeed, try another one. That seems to be the chief lesson that Democrats and the media learned from President Trump’s first term. For three-plus years, the political left, with the help of Never Trump Republicans, pushed the false claim that the president’s campaign colluded with Russia to win the 2016 election. Of course, this effort to annul Trump’s presidency and remove him from office failed. Thanks to a dishonest and partisan media, the American people were beat over the head with stories of Russian collusion to the point of numbness. The public became indifferent. Add those inconvenient things called facts to the mix, and the result was the slow, painful death of a conspiracy theory. Today, Russiagate may be effectively dead, but the anti-Trump conspiracies are not. Indeed, it seems the so-called Resistance is conjuring up a second hoax to hype should President Trump win reelection in November — one with the clear goal of, once again, ousting him from the White House for supposedly being illegitimately elected. This time, the Trump campaign’s co-conspirator is the US Postal Service. According to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), President Trump’s campaign is trying “to sabotage the election by manipulating the Postal Service to disenfranchise voters.” She also called Postmaster General Louis DeJoy a “top Trump mega-donor” and a “complicit crony” who is pushing new reforms that “threaten to deny the ability of eligible Americans to cast their votes through the mail in the upcoming elections in a timely fashion.” Several other Democratic lawmakers have echoed Pelosi’s warnings. Some have even called for a criminal probe of DeJoy. Journalists, meanwhile, are describing the president’s alleged collusion with the postmaster general to delay mail-in voting as a threat to democracy. The message is clear: President Trump is using the Postal Service to try to steal the election. DeJoy may not be bombing hospitals in Syria or supporting separatists in eastern Ukraine like Vladimir Putin, but he’s apparently the anti-Trump camp’s new favorite villain. Over the weekend, protesters gathered at DeJoy’s home in North Carolina and apartment in Washington, DC. (The postmaster is set to testify before the Republican-led Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Friday and before the Democratic-led House Oversight Committee next Monday.) The outrage stems in part from a flurry of online videos showing the removal of mail collection boxes — which liberals and progressives are decrying on social media as a sign of authoritarianism. In reality, it’s been routine for years for the Postal Service to remove mailboxes or move them to areas with higher traffic. The same practice occurred when Barack Obama was president. The left also believes that President Trump is opposing the money that Democrats want to give to the Postal Service in the latest coronavirus relief bill passed by the House. The president didn’t help himself here, suggesting that blocking the money will make universal mail-in voting impossible. The truth is, however, that the $25 billion sum intended for the Postal Service has nothing to do with mail-in ballots. An extra $3 billion is meant specifically for states “for contingency planning, preparation, and resilience of elections for federal office.” No one is actually stopping the Postal Service from getting money in order to hinder mail-in voting. And that’s despite the fact that universal mail-in voting would significantly increase the chances of voter fraud — a phenomenon far more common than Democrats and most journalists care to admit. As for those nefarious reforms that DeJoy is implementing, such as cutting down on overtime expenses, they’re meant to save an agency that is hurdling toward bankruptcy. But regardless, these changes are now not going into effect until after the election anyway. The nascent case for collusion between President Trump and DeJoy is forming right before our eyes. If the president wins in November, his enemies will no doubt claim that he disenfranchised voters by targeting the Postal Service to stop mail-in ballots. The election results, the anti-Trump resistance will argue, is therefore inaccurate and illegitimate. History will repeat itself. Democrats in Congress will call for investigations, and the media will do all they can to dig up dirt to help. Like the story of Russian collusion, it will all be a hoax, of course.
