Regardless of the COVID-19 pandemic closing government offices, the federal workforce increased to a record level over the past two years. The Partnership for Public Service said the government now employs 1,956,539 workers and is rising.
The group that promotes public service expressed surprise that government employment has increased amid warnings of a coming retirement wave. This news comes as the government has warned for years of a coming “Great Resignation,” and there were suspicions that COVID-19 would amplify it.
Another trend the group found is the attrition rate has kept steady over the past few years. It is at 5.2 percent in the Washington area, compared to 6.4 percent outside the area. In Western states, such as South Dakota, it is over 9 percent.
