While Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has set the standard for standing up to our adversaries, Biden’s nominee for climate czar, John Kerry, has built a reputation for being flaccid while dealing with our enemies. On the subject of climate, China has promised to be carbon-neutral by 2060 despite building new coal plants every year. Biden has not indicated how he would stem any of China’s imperialist ambitions regarding nations like India and Japan. China’s propaganda outlet, the Global Times, has heralded Biden’s team as a group of elites who favor multilateral discussions. Under Xi’s leadership, China aims to replace the US as the global power and a Biden administration seems ready to give them that space. California GOP chairwoman Jessica Patterson explained voters perceived the Democrats had failed to tackle issues such as affordability and homelessness while advocating for a radical socialist agenda. A staffer on the campaigns of both Mike Garcia and Michelle Steel said that, while Democrats argue for defunding the police, advocating good fiscal measures helped his candidates prevail despite being out-raised by lopsided margins. In a new study in the National Bureau of Economic Research, researchers from Dartmouth and Brown noted that American news coverage was marked by negativity even when faced with positive news surrounding vaccine trials, school re-openings, and declining cases. As far as the recent news regarding the vaccine produced by the University of Oxford, the study mentions that Fox News, CNN, the New York Times, and the Washington Post only began covering the story in April while the trials had started in mid-February. It is fair to speculate whether a distaste for President Trump led to the media’s biased reporting on the virus, and if so, this problem is not restricted to medical reporting. With Amy Coney Barrett on the Supreme Court, we've gone from harsher restrictions on religious freedoms to a court that will finally protect them. -Newt The Supreme Court Finally Has a Majority That Will Protect Religious Freedom By Henry Olsen Washington Post Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation to the Supreme Court excited many religious conservatives because they felt her originalist jurisprudence and devout personal faith would make her a staunch advocate of religious liberty. This week’s order enjoining New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) from enforcing attendance limits on houses of faith vindicates that trust. In recent Supreme Court cases in Nevada and California, the Supreme Court had upheld restrictions on houses of worship with Chief Justice Roberts joining the four liberal justices in the majority. In this week’s opinion, however, the court correctly held that New York’s restrictions targeted religious institutions in COVID-impacted areas while imposing looser restrictions on businesses of the same capacity. Without Justice Barrett, this opinion would not have been possible, as Chief Justice Roberts sided with the liberal wing of the court once again. In one paragraph, the court rightly acknowledged that the inability to receive Communion constituted irreparable injury for Catholics. The confirmation of Justice Barrett shows that a majority of the court believes that religious rights are worthy of protection as well. The killing of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh will help curtail Iran's nuclear aspirations. -Newt Another Bold Strike Against Iran By Reuel Marc Gerecht Wall Street Journal American intelligence operatives should tip their hats to Israel’s Mossad, which, by assassinating Iran’s preeminent nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, has shown a level of risk-taking with no US parallel. The CIA has not undertaken many bold operations in decades while Israel’s Mossad has been penetrating Iran for many years now. Fakhrizadeh has been an Israeli target for years, and it is likely that a lucky interception of information laid the groundwork to go ahead with the operation. Given Israel’s ability to strike Iran at any time with little possibility of any retaliation on Iran’s part, the message to Washington DC is clear. Despite the fact that the Iranian government promotes rabidly antisemitic conspiracy theories, Joe Biden and other Obama administration alumni have downplayed the threat to Israel posed by Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Even in a post-American order, Mossad has shown what can be done to combat an Islamist state with a decrepit security apparatus.
