The Worst Racist

By Aaron Kliegman On Tuesday, during the first presidential debate, Joe Biden accused President Donald Trump of trying to generate “racist hatred” and “racist division.” Biden added that the president “has done virtually nothing” for black Americans and that the president’s actions have been “disastrous for the African-American community.” I’ll give Biden this: It takes real chutzpah to say President Trump has done nothing for blacks just four days after the same man unveiled a comprehensive plan for black America. Speaking in Atlanta on Friday, the president announced the Black Economic Empowerment Platinum Plan, which outlines several steps the Trump administration will take to promote prosperity and security for black Americans in a second presidential term. “For decades, Democrat politicians like Joe Biden have taken black voters for granted,” President Trump said while announcing the plan. “They made you big promises before every election. And then the moment they got to Washington, they abandoned you and they sold you out.” President Trump’s message to black America is clear: He will be different by delivering concrete results. Through his plan, President Trump aims to create 3 million new jobs for the black community, open 500,000 new black-owned businesses, and increase black Americans’ access to capital by almost $500 billion over the next four years. Of course, opportunities for prosperity are impossible without law and order. To make the streets safe for business, President Trump will “restore safety to American’s great cities” by working with police departments, community leaders, and mental health professionals to install the best practices of accountable policing. The president will also push to continue reforming the criminal justice system. Regarding education, President Trump commits in his plan to close failing schools and replace them with “full school choice and education opportunity.” Moreover, he will “protect the vital role of” historically black colleges and universities. With his plan, President Trump is departing from the norm and defying conventional wisdom. Normally Republicans don’t bother campaigning for the black vote, knowing that black Americans will vote overwhelmingly for Democrats. Why devote the time and resources to a lost cause? President Trump doesn’t see it that way. He recognizes that much of the black community believes in family values. The Republican Party’s brand is what’s toxic to so many black Americans, not necessarily conservative ideas. Last week was the first time in recent memory that a Republican president outlined such a comprehensive plan to create prosperity within the black community. But what’s really striking is how directly President Trump is appealing to black voters. He is not just going through the motions. He wants to help, and he thinks he can win over black Americans — at least some. Part of President Trump’s strategy is to contrast his vision of freedom, economic growth, and safe streets with the experiences of the last five decades, during which the Democrats’ monopoly over the black vote has failed to uplift black Americans who are struggling. Indeed, at the core of the Platinum Plan is the idea that the free market is a better way for black Americans to create wealth than government programs. It’s a difficult argument to refute. Since 1964, American taxpayers have spent some $22 trillion to alleviate poverty in America, especially within the black community. This effort, which Biden helped steer for nearly 50 years as a senator and vice president, didn’t help in any measurable way. By now President Trump has credibility on this issue. Remember, he announced the Platinum Plan after overseeing an economy that boasted the lowest unemployment rate for black Americans ever. Perhaps this is why the president said last week that he “did more for the black community in 47 months … than Joe Biden did in 47 years.” The statement may be hyperbolic, but Joe Biden’s record on race should raise eyebrows. In the 1970s, he opposed busing as a way to integrate schools and had a “working relationship” with segregationist senators. In 2007, he called Barack Obama “the first mainstream African American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.” Just this year, Biden said, “Poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids.” And in May he added this: “If you’ve got a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or for Trump, then you ain’t black.” Apparently, Joe Biden is the arbiter of what real blackness is. Most notoriously, Biden wrote the 1994 crime bill, which imposed tougher sentences and increased funding for prisons. Go ask ten black Americans what they think of the bill and see how many respond favorably. Biden may win the black vote by a wide margin only because he’s a Democrat. President Trump, meanwhile, will likely garner a higher percentage of the black vote than any Republican presidential candidate in decades.
