What Newt’s Reading Judge Barrett is truly impressive. It will be impossible for the Left to attack her with any legitimacy. - Newt Amy Coney Barrett: A Dream for the Right, Nightmare for the Left By Nina Totenberg NPR Judge Amy Coney Barrett is a dream Supreme Court nominee for conservatives and a nightmare for liberals. She’s a devout Catholic, a mother of seven children, and a beloved professor at Notre Dame Law School. Her positions on key issues, including her opposition to the Supreme Court’s ruling on Obamacare and her expectation that Roe v. Wade will be hollowed out, indicate she would entrench the court’s balance of power in favor of the conservative side if confirmed. Indeed, Barrett’s confirmation would lead to a 6-3 conservative split on the court. Despite her close ideological alignment with the late Justice Antonin Scalia, Barrett seems less willing to adhere to precedent and has called for the overturning of many long-established decisions. This puts her more in line with Justice Clarence Thomas’s views on the subject. The Biden corruption runs deep. - Newt Yes, Joe Biden Is Compromised by His Family's Shady Foreign Dealings By The Editorial Board Washington Examiner A newly released report from the Senate committees on homeland security and finance detail how Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, took money from several suspicious foreign entities, including some controlled by the Chinese government. In addition to dealings with Chinese government entities and the People’s Liberation Army, members of the Biden family worked with corrupt Ukrainian oligarchs, the wife of Moscow’s former mayor, and a Kazakh power player. Millions upon millions of dollars flowed among numerous Biden family and foreign holdings. During his tenure as vice president, Joe Biden took Hunter on a diplomatic mission to China, after which the latter emerged with a deal estimated to approach $1.5 billion. Hunter also served on the board of the Ukraine-centered Burisma company as his father led the Obama administration’s diplomatic efforts with Ukraine, creating the perception of a conflict of interest at the least. While this evidence is not enough to establish a quid pro quo, Joe Biden’s ethical blindness regarding his son’s dealing is inexcusable. Current unemployment rates show the US job market is bouncing back from the coronavirus recession far faster than experts recently predicted. - Newt Unemployment Is Improving Far Faster Than Projected — Unlike After the Great Recession By Matt Weidinger Real Clear Policy After the 2008 economic recession, economists in the Obama-Biden administration released an infamous chart detailing the unemployment rates with and without the passage of President Obama’s stimulus plan. Once the stimulus was passed and the jobs did not materialize, congressional Republicans used those projections as a political cudgel to win back the House of Representatives in 2010. However, following the current recession induced by the coronavirus pandemic, August’s unemployment rate of 8.4 percent is far below the Congressional Budget Office’s (CBO) estimate of 15.8 percent for the third quarter of 2020. Even when adjusted for employee misclassification, the current unemployment rate is far below the CBO’s projection for this quarter and even the end of the year. Additionally, household employment has grown from 133.4 million in April to 147.3 million in August, close to the CBO’s projection for the end of 2020. Moreover, the actual employment-to-population ratio rebounded to 56.5 percent in August. These numbers seem to reinforce the fact that the recovery from the coronavirus recession under the Trump administration far exceeds the recovery that followed the 2008 financial crisis under the Obama-Biden administration. Florida is open because Gov. DeSantis understands that costly and indefinite prohibitions with questionable public health benefits are not sustainable or wise. - Newt Florida Reopens By James Freeman Wall Street Journal Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) has decided to lift all remaining coronavirus restrictions and vacate all penalties related to social distancing. One should be prepared for the media’s hysterical hyperventilation as Florida citizens are freed to exercise their own judgment given the risks. Compared to New York and New Jersey, which the media praised for imposing lockdowns, Florida has suffered fewer deaths per capita while also preserving its regional economy despite having a large senior population. Even as the media is likely to peddle context-free propaganda to induce panic about Florida in the coming weeks, DeSantis has affirmed the right of every Floridian to work. However, this does not mean that owners of restaurants and bars will not use their own discretion to formulate safety protocols and restrictions within their respective establishments. One can only hope that the growing understanding of First Amendment protections would vindicate DeSantis’s decision to entrust Florida’s business owners to manage the risks of the pandemic while not destroying their livelihoods. Amid a pandemic and wildfires, this is the focus in CA: The Berkeley City Council unanimously approved a measure that would prohibit grocery stores bigger than 2,500 square feet from displaying junk food and other unhealthy items in checkout aisles. - Newt Berkeley Poised to Ban Junk Food in Store Checkout Aisles By Kate Gibson CBS News This week, the Berkeley City Council unanimously approved a measure that would prohibit grocery stores smaller than 2,500 square feet from displaying junk food in their checkout aisles. The measure affects 25 local retailers, including Trader Joes, CVS, and Safeway, requiring them to place unhealthy food items in other parts of the store. Kate Harrison, a councilwoman from Berkeley, argued that the move was a “nudge” and not a ban. The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) lobbied for the ordinance and was successful in getting it passed. In a statement, the group argued that offering healthier options at checkout will make the concerned stores advance the city’s public health, adding that the pandemic has made this more necessary. The ordinance will need to pass the council a second time next month. If the measure passes, it will be adopted early next year. The Berkeley City Council also used a similar public health justification to pass a soda tax in 2014.
